Sector context

Certification in automotive

The automotive supply chain runs the most demanding quality regime in general manufacturing. IATF 16949 is its entry condition, and unlike most standards it comes with prescriptive core tools — APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC — plus every customer’s own specific requirements layered on top.

The transition to electric vehicles has widened the supplier base considerably. Battery pack assemblers, power electronics manufacturers, thermal management suppliers and software developers are entering automotive supply from adjacent sectors, and encountering IATF requirements for the first time.

Our automotive assessors have OEM and Tier 1 backgrounds. They will examine your control plan against your FMEA against your actual process, which is where the gaps generally are.

What certification delivers here

  • Eligibility for direct supply to OEM and Tier 1 supplier panels
  • Core tools applied analytically, improving capability and reducing PPM
  • Contingency planning that protects customer lines and your allocation
  • Improved OEM supplier scorecard performance and volume allocation
  • Structured entry route for EV and electronics suppliers new to automotive

What this sector is actually dealing with

The pressures behind the certification decision

Organisations rarely certify because they woke up wanting a management system. These are the reasons they actually give us.

Customer-specific requirements

Every OEM publishes additional requirements beyond IATF 16949, and conformance to all of them is mandatory and audited.

Core tools competence

APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA and SPC are frequently applied as documentation exercises rather than as the analytical tools they are.

Supply interruption risk

Contingency planning for utility, labour and supplier failure is an explicit IATF requirement because line stoppages are catastrophic.

New entrants to automotive

EV component and electronics suppliers arrive with capable engineering and no IATF-shaped quality system.
