Audits are conducted to ISO/IEC 17021-1 requirements with documented impartiality controls. The person who decides your certification is not the person who audited you — a separation many buyers assume exists everywhere and should verify.

“Which accreditation body assesses you, and does the scope cover my standard and sector?”
Why it matters
Accreditation is granted for specific standards in specific technical sectors. A body accredited for ISO 9001 in general engineering is not automatically accredited for ISO 27001 or for food. Verify with the accreditation body directly.

“What is the technical background of the assessor you will assign to me?”
Why it matters
You are entitled to know, and to object on reasoned grounds. An auditor without genuine experience in your process will find documentation gaps and miss operational risk.

“Can I see the IAF MD 5 calculation behind this quotation?”
Why it matters
Audit duration is set by rule, from effective headcount and risk category. A body that will not show the calculation is either not doing it or not doing it correctly.

“What is committed in writing, and what happens if you miss it?”
Why it matters
Certification timelines are largely predictable. Where they slip, it is usually corrective-action turnaround — which is within your control and should be explained to you honestly at the outset.

“Where is the assessor travelling from, and how is travel charged?”
Why it matters
Travel is a real cost. Ask whether it is charged at actual cost or marked up, and whether an assessor is resident near your site.

“Are surveillance audits included in this price, and when is the first one due?”
Why it matters
The first surveillance is due within twelve months of the certification decision date — not the certificate date. Low initial pricing with surveillance charged separately is a common structure; compare three-year totals.
